This screen serves to Aim: create shipment modes that can be subsequently used at the sales channels level.
Once created, shipment modes need to be linked to sales channels. One shipment mode can be associated to used in multiple sales channels in multiple organisationsand organizations.
Shipment modes are associated both linked to ticket delivery but also and to document delivery , (such as order summaries or invoices).
Each shipment has a type. Here is the list of types with purpose:

Beside a custom internal and external name, the most important parameter for a shipment mode is its type.
Each type allows specific functionalities.
